NEWS FROM PUPPY JAZZ

Arbors Records are making their contribution to the Jazz Foundation of America.

We are introducing two new labels this time. From Tennessee we have acquired the entire catalog of a label called Piano Joys. We also have a label from Detroit called Continental. We think you will like both labels.

First we add some releases from Arbors Records:
	The dynamic Chuck Redd, playing both drums and vibes, is leading an all star group comprised of Monty Alexander (p), Howard Alden (g), Gene Bertoncini (g), Robert Redd (p), Hassan Shakur (b) and Jeff Hamilton (dr). A marvelous recording. Arbors, ARCD19314.
	The great Warren Vache recorded this fantastic CD in Scotland with some marvelous musicians, James Chirillo, Brian Kellock, John Rae, Ronnie Rae and a Scottish string section. 11 Wonderful tracks played as only Warren can. Arbors, ARCD19318.
	From the Arbors Piano Series comes Volume 15 with Bernd Lhotzky, a wonderful pianist who is becoming better and better known. Here Bernd plays 23 tracks of solo piano. Some Berlin, Waller, Willie “The Lion”, Porter and more. A must have for fans of piano jazz. Arbors, ARCD19322.
	Volume 16 in the Piano Series is with the outstanding pianist, Jeff Barnhart. Jeff stomps his way through 16 tracks of Rags to Stride by a variety of composers. Jeff on records or in person is always a treat. He always gives 110% when playing. Arbors, ARCD19324.
	Two great guitarists, Jay Geils and Gerry Beaudoin, team up here in a group aptly called the ‘Kings of Strings’. To make it more exciting, they have added the young swinging violinist Aaron Weinstein. Jay is the founder of the the J. Geils Band and Gerry is the Grammy nominated guitarist. A swinging treat. Arbors, ARCD19332.
	Harry Allen, one of the premier tenor players on the scene today, paired with Joe Cohn and backed by Joel Forbes and Chuck Riggs cuts loose with 10 tracks of standards. You can also check these guys out in the Musicians Private Issue section on our web site. The kind of CD you will play again and again. Arbors, ARCD19333.
	The inimitable pianist, Dave Frishberg, at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles. This is a live recording with Dave talking and playing as only he can. This is a fun CD you will love. Arbors, ARCD19334.
From the Musicians Private Labels we have a variety of things:
	Patricia Dean is a wonderful singer who makes love to every tune she sings. Here she is backed by Charlie Prawdzik (p), Jay Mueller (b), Mark Speights (g), Herb Bruce (tb), Jim Snyder (cl), Orlando Sanchez (conga), and Matt Brown (perc). Highly recomended! PJ001.
	We have found another wonderful vocalist named Kimberley Kaye. She is backed by the great Don Scaletta on piano. Between the two of them you can only expect the very best as they work through 11 tracks of standards. KK001.
	The group is called "it's eclectic" and has Debbie Keaton on vocals backed by the wonderful Matt Bokulic (p) Gary Deary (b) and Tony Martin (dr). This is a group that continually works and has been together for quite a while. They are immensely popular and it is great to have them on CD. ECD001.
	You may think "The Magnificent 8" is a bit over- named. Not so at all! This is a group from Germany with added musicians from Holland and England. They swing their way through 14 tracks of marvelous tunes. The group is led by Nico Gastreich on drums and features some of Europe's finest musicians. 102004.
	Dave Moragn is a fine vocalist, drummer and vibist, backed by Jeff Lashway on trombone and keyboards and Jamie Ousley on acoustic bass. Together they go through eleven marvelous standards. Check them out! DMGN-001.
	The outstanding Detroit pianist Matt Michaels is featured here in a live solo performance from the Kerrytown Concert House. A great collection of standards with an added feature of a Gershwin Medley. If the audience reaction is any indication, this was a fantastic evening for all. PBM-005.
Now we come to one of our new labels, Continental. There are two CDs at the moment with another three being worked on at the moment. All the CDs feature the marvelous Eddie Pawl, a marvelous reed player and sometime vocalist. Eddie is from Detroit and is a transplant to Florida where he spends his Winters. Eddie is much loved for his warmth, generosity and great wit. Detroit fans know him for many years where he played at his own supper club for dining and dancing. Florida audiences know him for the same reason.
	This CD was recorded at The Lido, a supper club in the Detroit area and Features Eddie Pawl, the Messina brothers, Jimmy and Wally and Frank Addota. This was one of Detroit’s most popular supper clubs and always featured great music for dancing. Continental 001.
	This CD features 5 tracks from Sullivans in Sarasota and two tracks from The Lido in Detroit. See 001 for comments about the Lido. Sullivans Irish Pub was a gathering place for good food and great jazz. Features Eddie Pawl (as), Charlie Prawdzik (p) Ernie Williford & Richard Drexler (b) Johnny Moore (dr). Wonderful CD. Piano Joys is a label founded in 1995 by Charlie Booty. Charlie is well known on the Boogie Woogie and Blues circuit and is a marvelous exponent of this genre. Charlie felt, and rightly so, that the many players of these genres were not being heard enough and so he contacted all these fine players and told them what he intended to do. It was met with great enthusiasm. Charlie has had to overcome a lot of adversity in his life. Cancer of the larynx in 1971, which resulted in muscles to be cut in the left shoulder, requiring re-training of his playing. In 1977 he was in a plane crash resulting in a loss of memory and a total loss of how to play the piano. Charlie learned to play again. Charlie’s warmth, wit and great talent comes through to all who know him and hear him. There is a Sampler and 24 CDs on this label. We are listing the Sampler and the first 8 CDs in this news letter. The remainder will be in the next news letter. We want to point out that some of these CDs are not hi-fi quality since they were recorded at so called Rent Parties. The music is great all the same and the sound quality is the best possible. We are proud to have Charlie and his many friends featured in our catalog.
	This Sampler has a collection of fine players, Charlie Booty, Carl “Sonny” Leyland, Charlie Castner, Ben Conroy, Martin Pyrker, Tom Harris, Jack Yates, George Green and Bill Mitchell. This will give you an idea what this label is all about. Piano Joys, PJ-Sampler-1.
	This CD features Charlie Booty and Carl “Sonny” Leyland on 19 tracks of solos and duets. They were recorded at piano parties in Fort Worth, TX and Evansville, IN. It doesn’t come much better than this. Piano Joys, PJ-001.
	As the saying goes "get some o' that good likkah and have me a whopping good time...". Here Charlie Booty stomps his way through 19 tracks of Boogie Woogie and Blues. some famous and some not so. This CD harks back to the good old days, which, by the way, are still here. Piano Joys, PJ-002.
	Volume One in the Rent Party Echos series, featuring some outstanding exponents of Boogie Woogie, Blues and Stomps. Charlie Booty, Charlie Castner, Ben Conroy, Tom Harris, Phil Kiely, Chris Page, Dick Mushlitz and Big John Welch. 22 superb tracks. Piano Joys, PJ-003.
	The second volume in the Rent Piano Echoes series featuring Charlie Booty, Charlie Castner, Ben Conroy, Tom Harris, Phil Kiely, Chris Page, Dick Mushlitz and Big John Welch, playing 24 outstanding tracks. Recorded between 1973 and 1991 in Louisville, KY. Piano Joys, PJ-004.
	Russ Gilman is a unique pianist, here playing through 26 tracks of Boogie Woogie, Stomps, Rags and Blues in his own style. We had never heard of Russ until this CD and like it very much. He is quite a player. Piano Joys, PJ-005.
	Richard Egan is a fine, relatively young player who hails from Manchester, MO. Egan is very fond of the rags composed by Brun Campbell. Here he is playing through 21 tracks of Rags as only he can play them. This CD was recorded in St. Louis, MO, at Gator Studios. A fine CD. Piano Joys, PJ-006.
	Volume 3 in the Rent Party Echoes Series, featuring Martin Pyrker, Charlie Castner, Ben Conroy, Charlie Booty, Carl “Sonny” Leyland and Dick Mushlitz. The 23 tracks were recorded in Dallas, TX between 1978 and 1999. Piano Joys, PJ-007.
	Volume 4 in the Rent Party Echoes series, recorded in Dallas, TX, and Fort Worth, Tx, between 1978 and 1999. 23 Tracks featuring some great players, Carl “Sonny” Keyland, Charlie Booty, George Green, Ben Conroy and Dick Mushlitz. A lot of fine playing here. Piano Joys, PJ-008.
