NEWS FROM PUPPY JAZZ


It is jazz season! There is so much jazz out there and so little time. Puppyjazz can help keep your ears busy and happy.

There are four new releases this month as well as announcements for three great concerts, none of which should be missed.

There is also sad news.

If you missed Chihiro Yamanaka's concert, you missed one the years most fantastic concerts. It was an artistic achievement unparalled. As the saying goes, she all but destroyed the 9' Steinway concert grand. The audience loved her! Maybe she will be back next year.

 

FIRST CONCERT:

Arbors Records is doing it again! Saturday, March 15, 2008 at 7:30 PM at the Venice Church of the Nazarene, 1535 East Venice Avenue, Venice, FL. This is the Second Annual Musical Tribute to Bob Haggart. The line-up if musicians at this years extravaganza are: Randy Sandke, Jon-Eric Kellso (trumpets), John Allred, Wycliff Gordon (trombones), Harry Allen (tenor sax), Ken Peplowski (clarinet), Antii Sarpilla [Finland] (reeds), Dick Hyman and Derek Smith (pianos), Howard Alden, Bucky Pizzarelli (guitars), Aaron Weinstein (violin), Nicki Parrott (bass), Butch Miles (drums), and Carol Sloane (vocals).

Tickets are $45.00 and $35.00 and can be had at Arbors offices at 1-800-299-1930.

This is a concert not to be missed!

 

SECOND CONCERT:

The second concert is Thursday, April 3rd, 2008 at 7:30 PM to be held at Glenridge Performing Arts Center, Palmer Ranch, 7333 Scotland Way, Sarasota, FL, and features Diane Linscott (vocal), Harry Allen (tenor) Charlie Prawdzik (piano) Mark Neuenschwander (bass) Johnny Moore (drums) and Rick Peterson (guitar). This is a celebration of Diane's new CD, "Once Upon A Summertime". Price per ticket is $20.00.

 

 THIRD CONCERT:

Well, not really a concert, it is called First Annual Arbors Records Invitational Piano Jazz Party! WOW! It will be held at the Sheraton Sand Key Resort on Clearwater Beach - remember the March of Jazz Parties, same place. The concerts take place on Friday, January 16 and Saturday, January 17, 2009. (Note the year!) Concerts are scheduled for Friday, 7:00 PM - 12 and Saturday, 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 12;00. All event ticket price $200.00 (No individual event tickets will be sold). Call 1-800-299-1930 for tickets. Seating is limited to 200 people at 20 tables of 10 each. A 10% discount will be given for tables of 10 reserving together. Seating will be assigned in order of reservations.

The line-up is as follows: Shelly Berg, Dick Hyman, Bernd Lhotzky, Louis Mazetier, Rossano Sportiello, Johnny Varro (pianos), Warren Vache (cornet); Ken Peplowski (clarinet), Bucky Pizzarelli (guitar), Aaron Weinstein (violin), Nicki Parrott (bass), Ed Metz Jr. (Drums).

Three more musicians have been added: Antii Sarpilla (reeds) John Allred (trombone) and Howard Alden (guitar).

This is a party not to be missed!!!

We lost two musicians, Phil Bodner, who played and recorded with everybody. Phil was super-talented and will be missed my many.

We also lost Charlie Booty, a marvelous boogie woogie and blues players. Charlie had many friends, all of whom loved him. He was a personal friend and was the owner of the label Piano Joys which is on our website. We will have more on this label next month. From Arbors Records there are three new releases this month:
The sixth CD of this marvelous duo, Harry Allen and Joe Cohn. Tis is their regular Quartet augmented by John Allred and Scott Hamilton. Harry and Joe's musical kinship just gets better and better with each CD. Here they play 10 tracks of wonderful standards including some by Harry. Just a marvelous swinging CD. Arbors, ARCD19353.

The marvelous drummer Joe Ascione is at it again with Alan Vache, John Cocuzzi and Frank Tate. With sidemen like that, how can you mis. Joe is one of the premier drummers on the scene today, he is extremely fast with impeccable taste. This swings like nobody's business! Arbors, ARCD19359.

A great duo recording with Tom McDermott and Connie Jones paying tribute to their musical heritage of New Orleans. Naturally they are all NO standards and the two of them swing their way through 15 tracks of wonderful music. Arbors, ARCD19366.
